One Tree Cabin

Book your stay with AirBnB.com

The cabin is located a few miles outside of Truckee, CA and was built in the Fall of 2008.  We tried to use as many reclaimed materials as possible.  The redwood decking and siding were reclaimed from another construction site and the wainscoting is found pallet wood.  We installed 4 inches of foam insulation and use a highly efficient Cylinder Stove as the primary heat source as there is no electric or water.  We also use a 5 gallon bucket as a compostable sawdust toilet!

The 120 sq ft was inspired by The Shack at Hinkle Farm by Jeffrey Broadhurst.

One Tree Stump

A neighbor of ours cut down a huge redwood tree (jerk) so I grabbed two of the stumps to make some bedside tables.  I sanded the bark off and used epoxy resin to encase some Surfer's Journal magazine pics.

One Tree Handplanes

Every surfer or body boarder should have a set of fins and a handplane in their car at all times.  When the waves close out or your arms wear out the handplane comes in handy.

One Tree Handplanes are made from worn out skateboards, surf leashes, and wetsuits.  They are hand-shaped with bottom contours to increase speed and glide.  I use an all natural Boiled Linseed Oil preservative to treat the wood.

Check out some world class bodysurfing here.

The F2VEGIE

Several years ago I came across a project by the Malloy Brothers and Jeff Johnson in partnership with Patagonia called "Bend to Baja."  They begin their journey in Bend, OR where they convert an old diesel truck to run on waste vegetable oil.  They proceed to drive all the way to Baja, skiing, climbing, and surfing as they went.  If they can do it, I can do it.  Behold the birth of the F2VEGIE.

I began with a 2001 Ford F250 4x4 Super Duty 7.3 Liter Diesel truck and purchased a VeggieStroke conversion kit from Dino Fuel Alternatives.  The kit was installed by the good 'ole boys at Veg Rev in Oakland, CA. I obtain the waste veggie oil from a local restaurant and filter it in my shed.  I've driven well over 80,000 miles on Waste Veggie Oil and we haven't had any problems...
The truck has been sold and can now be seen shredding Squaw Valley USA!

One Tree Wine Barrel Rocking Chair

Saw one of these selling for $500 but that is ridiculous.  I found this barrel so my chair was a whopping $Free.99!  It now lives at the cabin.  Someday I'll make a mate.

One Tree ReSkis

I was getting bored with the same old graphics on my Volkl Gotamas but still loved the skis, so out came the paint pens.  The inspiration was the idea of Japanese Psychedelic Cowboy...don't ask.  They have since been sold!

One Tree ReCycle

The One Tree ReCycle was created in the spirit of the Klunkerz.  For those of you that are not aware of the history of Mt. Biking, the Klunkerz were the true originators of the sport.  By converting war era fat tire beach cruisers, they would explore Mt. Tamalpais (Mt. Tam) located in Marin County California, just north of the Golden Gate Bridge.  The documentary is a must see for any mountain biking enthusiast.  http://www.klunkerz.com/

I began with a Schwinn style cantilevered frame with modern dimensions that I bought for $40.  I added all previously loved parts obtained from craigslist and the non-profit organization Trips for Kids which operates the Marin ReCyclery.  The wheels were laced around a Bendix coaster brake hub which made for a really scary (but authentic) ride.  The Brooks leather saddle was found at a used bike parts co-op in Missoula, MT and was well worn!  The only new product on the bike was the hand grips made of cork, a highly renewable resource.

The ReCycle was a blast to ride and was taken on many great adventures! The bike has been sold and may now be seen on the streets of Davis, CA.  Enjoy!
